I hate driving home from class and seeing the squares (small parks) beginning to fill with homeless people for the night; however, crime comes with poverty, which is why I tend to stay indoors after dark.

The reason I am bringing this up is because on my way home this evening, I passed by a square in which I noticed a group of 5, two women and three men, sitting on the park benches with luggage and covered in blankets. As I was making the turn around the park headed home, I looked at the pizza box sitting next to me on the seat and questioned whether or not I really needed the last 6 slices. Without hesitation, I turned my car around and parked about 25 feet away from the group of five. I stepped out of the car with an idea of what I wanted to say, but did not want to appear judgmental or rude at all as if I was speaking down to them. I simply said: ” Hello. I am not trying to be rude, but I have about 6 slices of a pizza left over if you are interested.” They jumped up with excitement. The older woman hugged me and said: “Thank you. Thank you!” She began to tear.

It was a small gesture, but worth my time. The reason I am posting this is not to receive credit in any way. I just know that I sometimes forget to appreciate what I have, when there are people in the world that have much less than I. So spread some hugs, and make somebody smile. Its worth your time.

For starters

Two weeks have already passed by, so I need to catch you up.

After lots of scrambling to find a great apartment, I have settled and am loving my spot in downtown Savannah. I live in a single apartment on the west side of Forsyth Park. I love letters, which is why I am providing my address for all of you poets out there.

106 W. Gwinnett Street

Apt. 5C

Savannah Georgia, 31401

I am heading into my third week of classes, already! I have decided on a graduation date and am excited to be graduating early. Though I am uncertain whether it will Thanksgiving of 2012 or Spring Break of 2013, I am certain I will be graduating before my class. I am currently enrolled in four classes, which is unusual for SCAD. Generally, unless a student presents a great reason, SCAD prefers a student to only be enrolled in three at a time due to the acceleration of SCAD’s classes. I will provide details of each class soon, but for now only the names:

Monday and Wednesday:

8:00am-10:30am Literature by Women

5:00pm-7:30pm Color Technique (Photography)

Tuesday and Thursday:

8:00am-10:30am Fundamental so Typography for Advertising Designers

2:00am-4:30pm Understanding Client Objectives for Advertising Designers

More to come! :)

It's no Hong Kong adventure, but still thick with my everyday experiences.

Hello everyone!

After much consideration on what to do with my Hong Kong blog, I have decided to essentially recreate it and mainly use to to keep in better contact with my family and friends in Maryland. I will be updating just as often, but with information about my life in Savannah, Georgia.

I hope you all enjoy what is to come! I am very excited.

I am currently sitting in my Advertising Perspectives and Profiles class ready for this day to be over. I am at the point in most of my classes where we are simply having class because we have to. My finals in this class are over- I have one paper due on Wednesday, but aside from that, I am certainly on the hom stretch. The next time you all hear from me I will be getting ready to board my plane home!

I love and miss everyone! Prepare your arms for hugging!

Hi everybody! Sorry that I have not updated- I have been very...

Hi everybody! Sorry that I have not updated- I have been very busy. As most of you know, I am currently attacking finals while trying to prep for the flight home in 9 days. It is all happening so quickly and I sure have plenty to keep me busy.

School is going very well and I am really excited with how hard I have pushed myself this quarter. Regardless of location and people, this has been my best quarter at SCAD thus far. I would do anything to return to such wonderful professors and facilities. SCAD has really done a great job with the Hong Kong campus- I am so lucky to experience it all.

As for this past two weeks, I have been busy prepping myself for finals as well as killing myself in the gym. I know that I have mentioned Justin’s name before (the basketball player)- he is working with me in the gym every night for about 1 hr- 1:20 hr. He has taught me so much about physical fitness and strength. I feel as if I actually know what to do now when I go to the gym. I am working my hardest and plan on keeping it up when I get home. I have pushed myself harder then ever before. For any of you that know what P90X is- that’s the ab workout that I finish with every night. It is a complete killer, but I have seen major improvements in two weeks. I am getting much stronger and really happy with the results!

As for everything else, it is raining here today which is great weather for getting stuff done. I am trying to work very hard so that I am able to really experience Hong Kong one more time this weekend before I fly out next Thursday.

The weather is still hot, and I have not yet had to wear my fleeces or a sweater unless I am inside the SCAD building- SCAD keeps it freezing cold in the classrooms. I am not prepared at all for the weather at home. The coldest it has reached here it still about 65degrees. I don’t remember ever wearing shorts in November in my life.

Some updates about my classes:

Advertising Perspectives and Profiles (Monday/Wednesday at 4:00pm)

The Morton Salt Girl (the picture attached). I have officially given my presentation and taken my final exam for this class- so I am certainly on the home stretch. My Morton Salt presentation went very well, which was needed after taking my final exam. I knew that my test grade was not reflective of my best work, which is why I worked very hard on my presentation. Hopefully I will finish of this class with a bang. I have one more assignment in this class that is due next Wednesday (class 20- my last class). The assignment is to write a paper about a topic that reflects advertising and media today. I have not yet chosen my topic- but it should be a fairly reasonable assignment.

Creative Concepting (Tuesday/Thursday at 1:00)

This class is also coming to an end. In case that I did not mention this in the beginning of the quarter- each class is worth 5 points, so it is a bad idea to miss this class. Because of this way of grading, we are graded throughout the quarter rather then a midterm and final exam. I only have three classes left in this class, which means that only 15 more points. I have been averaging about 9/10 points each week, so my final grade for this class should be an A if I continue to make the grades that I am currently receiving.

Black and White Technique (Tuesday/Thursday 4pm)

This class has changed my whole perspective about photography. Working with both 35mm and 4x5 has been an amazing experience in which I will continue throughout the rest of my career at SCAD. I am finally understand and appreciating photography as well as looking at it in an entire new light. I am in the middle of working on my final right now and have a mid-critique tomorrow so that the professor can give us feedback about where we stand. I am feeling pretty good about my work- as my professor has only given positive feedback thus far. I will let you know how my final goes. Fingers crossed :)

I cannot wait to see everyone for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I miss you all so much.

9 days baby!!

Love, Carter

I am so sorry everyone, but I will update the blog tomorrow...

I am so sorry everyone, but I will update the blog tomorrow along with catching up on emails! Finals are rough!

Love you all!

9 DAYS!!! :)

Hello Everybody! I cannot believe that it is 39degrees at home!...

Hello Everybody! I cannot believe that it is 39degrees at home! Wow! I cannot imagine that kind of cold and am certainly not prepared for the weather. I only packed one pair of khaki’s for Hong Kong. I guess I am going to have to buy a pair of pants for the plane ride- because I am going to be freezing. Can you believe three weeks from now I will be landing in BWI? I am so excited but also saddened to leave the relationships that I have made in Hong Kong.

The weather here is still in the high 80’s every day and rather humid. I have been wearing shorts and T shirts since the first day I arrived in September. The weather here has yet to change! However, some nights it get down to 75degrees or so and I am able to open my windows instead of using the AC unit which is nice. Living at Gold Coast has been wonderful. I am certainly thankful for living by the water- though it is very frustrating to know that I cannot just go down to the harbor and jump onto a boat! I miss being out on the water- especially in this weather!

This week has been tough as usual. My weeks seem to be progressively getting tougher; however, this week has been extra hard because I have been very homesick. There are moments where all is fine and dandy, and there are moments where I am holding back everything I have just to keep my cool. It makes the trip much nicer when I get to talk to the people I love and I certainly have been doing that. Thank you to everyone who has been emailing and Skyping me while I am here. It means a lot- thank you.

As for my classes…

Advertising Perspectives and Profiles (Monday/Wednesday at 4:00pm)

This class is coming to an end quite earlier then my professor intended. Due to the fact that there are only 5 students in my class, we are flying through the information and actually have reached the point in the class where we are “filling” space by adding on some assignments. My professor wrote the class syllabus for a class of about 20, so you can imagine how much quicker assignments pass with 5 students. My final exam review is on Monday October 31, which means that I will be taking my final the following Wednesday: November 2nd. I am very nervous because I did not do as well on my midterm as planned. However, since midterms my grade has gotten back up to an A, so I am not overly scared about this exam. My final presentation is coming up and I am sure I will do well (Morton Salt Girl). This past week we explored from 1975-2011: in 1975 the economy was in the worst shape since the Depression; the PC revolution!; Wireless remotes; 1981- the Pepsi Cola wars; Advertising -> persuade and preform; Disco and drugs!; Michael Jackson; Bill Cosby; Apple “Think Different”; “Where’s the beef?!”; Got Milk?; AIDS awareness; Ad’s were becoming more visually interesting; Hallmark; and sex and art! This class has been incredibly informative. I am really happy that I took it and learned a lot.

Creative Concepting (Tuesday/Thursday at 1:00)

This class has been very fun this past week. As I said about last week, my professor was using such repetitive assignments that most of us were losing interest- but he brought a great assignment for this week. This week we applied what is called: 180degree thinking. This means that we are to take the opposite approach a product in hope to spark a very unique idea. For example: If I was given the product Tylenol, I would write down mannerisms in which I saw in normal Tylenol ads and commercials. Then I would turn around and write an antonym for the words in which I jotted down. This is making the product incredibly interesting and certainly does allow for “different” and unique ideas.

Black and White Technique (Tuesday/Thursday 4pm)

This class is my worst enemy and the cause of all of my happiness this quarter. There is no room for all of the emotions in which I feel for this class. As I posted about a day ago, my teacher is introducing Large Format Photography, which is incredible. I am learning a lot but at a very past pace which is where I am struggling. My professor teaches us as if we have the ability to apply it immediately, with no room for mistakes. I guess that is the best way to approach 4x5 shooting because I am positive that I will make a mistake and hopefully learn from it! I was assigned to shoot 10 photographs for class on Tuesday. I shot on Saturday around Gold Coast because I am fearful of taking this camera elsewhere. I am sure my fear will wear off, but I did not want to waste time and money for my first shoot when I have never shot 4x5 before. I ended up shooting boats entering and leaving the harbor. I purposely did this to release a lot of the homesickness that I have been feeling. So regardless of what my teacher thinks of the photographs- it was a well needed shoot.

I am about to head to the gym and get a good run in to prep my mind for another mad week. Hope all is well at home. I miss and love you all. 3 weeks!

Hi everybody! I thought that this post required it’s own...

Hi everybody! I thought that this post required it’s own space, so here it goes.

Entering into week 7, my Black and White professor introduced us to 4x5 and gave us each our own camera and tripod. We are required to shoot 10 images by Tuesday.

Some info for those who do not know about 4x5 cameras:

Large format refers to any imaging format of 4×5 inches (102×127 mm) or larger. The main advantage of large format, film or digital, is higher resolution. A 4×5 inch image has about 16 times the area, and thus 16× the total resolution, of a 35 mm frame. The most common large format is 4×5 inches, which was the size of common cameras used in the 1930s-1950’s, like the Speed Graphic, Crown Graphic, Graphlex, and many others.

Though I am really nervous about the entire process, I know that I will be getting a great experience by pushing myself!

Homesick Wednesday

Feeling very homesick today so please let me know you are thinking about me and missing me at home. It is 9am here and I am up bright and early to settle on a productive day. As you all know, SCAD is about 40 minutes by bus each day from where the students reside, so once I am here, I don’t leave until the end of the day. I actually don’t have class until 4pm today, but due to the fact that today is the day where I sign up for classes, I am giving myself a lot of room for mess ups. This weekend was a great weekend. It all began with the Frank Gehry field trip, which I have already provided information about. Onto Saturday was a nice relaxing day to be with friends. I ate a fantastic dinner and enjoyed a late night steam room trip after laughing incredibly hard at some YouTube videos with friends. Sunday was brilliant as well. I woke up in the afternoon just in time to catch a bus with my roommate and her friend Justin- we went to the courts to watch Justin play. Justin is being recruited for the Filipino Olympic team for basketball, so if you can imagine, watching someone that good on the courts was really awesome. After that we all grabbed some dinner and returned to SCAD to end our Sunday evening with homework.

As you may know, it is already week 7 for me, which means only 4 weeks left until I return home!

Onto my classes:

Advertising Perspectives and Profiles (Monday/Wednesday at 4:00pm)

Repeating what I have posted before, I had a big paper due last week which was worth 25% of my grade, which can really benefit my average if the paper goes well. I am nervous of course, but know that I did try my hardest and that my grade should reflect that. As for this class, it is getting more and more interesting by the minute. Though sitting in a 2 1/2 hour class every other day does get cumbersome, I have learned so much! This past week we attacked the 1960’s to early 1970’s: Peter Max, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein; smoking became a health hazard (finally!); FTC issued new regulations stipulating that children were not to be exposed to disguised advertising; the average child is exposed to more than 20,000 TV ads; Nixon and Kennedy; Levy’s!;The Era of Civil Rights; every home had a TV or radio; Africans were still discriminated; Stereotypes kicked in; Aunt Jemima; advertisements left the scientific world and developed into more inspirational and creative; women as sex objects; George Lois; and Dunkin Donuts. Overall, we are learning a fair amount, and certainly a lot of information each class. I am hoping that with a bit of luck, my grade will reflect my passion for this type of knowledge.

Creative Concepting (Tuesday/Thursday at 1:00)

I have mixed feelings towards this class. Though I am learning a lot, it is very tiring, time consumer, and quite boring for my interest to really be that lit. At first I really enjoyed this class, and to be quite honest, I still do; however, we do the same thing every single week which has become a bit repetitive and boring. This past weekend I had to meet up with my other two classmates at Starbucks to discuss how we were going to push the new thing: Cuban Coffee now at Starbucks. We used the process called 190mph thinking, which means that you literally are scribbling millions of ideas down onto stickie notes in hope that one sparks a great concept for an advertisement. I love Starbucks, so this assignment was ok in my book!

Black and White Technique (Tuesday/Thursday 4pm)

(daydreaming) Back when I had a life before Black and White. This class certainly feels like my most important and toughest class due to the amount of work I am given. However, what is crazy about this class is how fun it is- which balances out my feelings towards all the work we have to do. I was just given the ok to shoot 3 roles of film to my liking: my choice of subject matter, my lighting preferences, and my own way of developing a concept. I chose to attack something that is very personal to me and photographed in low lighting, but very emotional. I love how the prints came out and think that this is a concept in which I will certainly further explore for my upcoming project due Thursday. To be frank, my professor has now gone into overdrive mode and seems to be comfortable there. The amount of work I have between now and finals is unreal and I am not sure if he understands that I am taking other classes aside from his. I hope I survive and still get some sleep!

I hope you all have a great week and enjoy the end of October! I bet the weather at home is beautiful! I am still stuck in shorts and tanktops. :/

Good morning! I have many updates today, but for starters, let me tell you about this past Friday…

For my Black and White Technique Class, my professor had planned several weeks in advance for our class to tour the Frank Gehry Exhibition in Hong Kong after completing his first piece of architecture within Asia…

A bit of information about the project:

In the 1940s, Swire Group acquired this exceptional site on The Peak, Hong Kong’s most exclusive residential district, to build a house for a top executive. With its unspoilt terrain and unrivalled views across the city and Victoria Harbour, the prestigious address has long been a favoured setting for the island’s most elite homes.

Over 70 years after Swire first built a home at 53 Stubbs Road, the company decided to commission a new residential property for the location. Due to its remarkable secluded position and 360˚ views that are unlikely to be obstructed by future developments, Swire believed the rare and prestigious site required a global architect with a wholly original approach who shared the company’s belief that great architecture can change our lives for the better.

Frank Gehry was the natural choice.

The details of living:

1. There are 12 stories to this building

2. 6500 square feet per unit

3. To rent: $50,000 US dollars a month (aka. college tuition! and just for a month!)

4. To buy (this is only for long term residence and the project is not releasing information about this at all; however, my professor provided the information: about $62 million dollars to buy a flat.

My experience of a guided tour for this project was unreal. I enjoyed it all so much! It was incredible and led to a great morning!

So sorry about the delayed writing. I have been wanting to update you all week, but its been a very very busy time. For starters…Midterms were this past week: October 10th-15th, which means that we are told by our teachers where we stand in each of our classes. However, this is also the week where we are tested of the information thus far into the quarter. Good news though! Midterms also means that I am more than half way through the quarter which is very exciting. I come home on the 18th of November, which is exactly a month away (31 days!!!)

I know that I have not been updating much about the culture here, but there is so much to say that I would rather update you all on my day to day schedule and dig into the culture when I return home. I will have plenty of pictures to show and am very excited to share my experience. I am so happy that I made the decision to come to Hong Kong; I feel like I have grown up so much and really found my comfort zone. 6 weeks in, I feel at home; I feel welcomed into the culture; I am really going to miss the campus here as well. SCAD Hong Kong rocks.

As for the details:

Advertising Perspectives and Profiles (Monday/Wednesday at 4:00pm)

This class is by far my biggest struggle at this point. Though I am really enjoying it and getting a lot of all of the history, I am struggling with my test taking, as we are tested on memorization. All of my grades thus far into the quarter have been A’s for the exception of my midterm exam, which is scored a C on; this brought my average to a high C/low B. I am not pleased with these results at all and have a midterm conference coming up with my teacher in about two days, which will clear up a lot. This is also the class where our final project is a presentation and as I have talked about before, I am required to talk as if I am the Morton Salt Girl. Due to the fact that I have a lot of stage experience, I see that going very well, which will help my grade a lot. However, we also have a final exam just like the one we took for midterms, so I am considering asking for a SCAD tutor to help me get through that last exam. As for what we are studying: today we will make our transition from the 50’s to the 60’s. I am really excited and definitely interested in exploring the decade in which my parents were born. After all, they rock so, it must be a cool decade.

Creative Concepting (Tuesday/Thursday at 1:00)

This is the only class that I did not have a midterm for, which was really amazing since I was so busy with my other two classes. This class is very stressful in class, but out of class time, it is pretty relaxed. I feel no need to stress and just to work my butt off in class. I came out with an A for my midterm grade in this class, which is great news. This means that I am scheduling my time right, which was a big question that I had. Since my professor does not give us a lot of information about grades throughout the beginning of the quarter, is was a major relief to hear that I have an A. My intention is just to continue what I have been doing and try my best and hopefully come out with an A for my final. This class is very consistent, which is why I like it!

Black and White Technique (Tuesday/Thursday 4pm)

This class….there are no words for how much work that I have been given these past 10 days. My professor and I are beginning to understand how each other work, which has helped our relationship. Yoav (my professor) is one of the most particular man that I have ever met. He is very enjoyable to be around, but is a complete hard ass. I fear doing things incorrectly, because he calls you out in front of everyone. Unless you manage your time correctly, you will fail, as two people in my class. I came out with an A in this class for midterms, which is the best news this quarter. I am so excited that I am given this type of credit for how hard I have been working. My midterm for this class was on a Saturday (gross!!!) and I was at the building and in the dark room from 8AM-6pm. It was so exhausting, but it gave me a chance to really get ahead for this week and to appreciate the process of developing. Patience is key for this class, and I am trying my best to be as patient as possible.

Otherwise, all is well. I miss and love everyone and I cannot wait to see you all in a month or so! Knowing that I am coming home to my wonderful family for Thanksgiving and Christmas is what is getting me through the homesickness of this trip. Hopefully my boyfriend is also coming home to see me at Thanksgiving? (hint hint) :)

Love you all!

Hi everybody!

Though I woke up a few hours ago, I have yet to get out of bed. Sunday’s are a great opportunity for me to update everyone! It is finally sunny with no overcast, which means that I will be heading to the pool very soon :)

Last night a group of us went to a rooftop bar to celebrate Natalie’s 21st birthday, which is Tuesday! It was really fun (the pictures are from last night).

This weekend has been very enjoyable and relaxing. Friday night, I went to a hookah bar in Central, Hong Kong, which was also very relaxing and fun. Hookah bars serve hummus, which made me happier then ever! The hookah flavor that the table chose was Rose, which had a very interesting taste. It was rather sweet, but strange to be tasting the flavor of a flower.

As most of you know, though I have been here for 6 weeks, I am going into my 5th week of school- which means MIDTERMS….

Advertising Perspectives and Profiles (Monday/Wednesday at 4:00pm)

This week, our class finally made it to the 1950’s. To give you a better idea: The war is over! Pop culture emerges. The atomic space age! The “catch up” phase. Teens take over and rebel. Women return to working at home, now that men are back from war. TV is becoming huge- by 1960, every home had one. You are what you drive- status was detected by automobile. Penicillin! The diner’s club! Refrigerators came in over 50 colors. Chef Bouyardee. Instant foods. Reddi Whip. Silly puddy and hula hoops. The Pepsi Generation. Howdy Doody. I love Lucy! The Maiden form Bra. Crest toothpaste. Timex. Tail fins on cars, inspired by WW11 airplanes. Homes for the “atomic age”. Playboy magazine. Saddle shoes! And good old rock and roll!
I absolutely loved learning about 50’s advertising. My midterm is on Wednesday October 12th, so we are using Monday’s class as a review session. I am getting awfully nervous.

Creative Concepting (Tuesday/Thursday at 1:00)

This week, my professor had us dig very deeply into ‘The do-it-yourself Lobotomy’, an Advertising book about creating ideas. The chapter we read, led us to our next assignment: Deep Diving.
The Deep Diving assignment is our MIDTERM assignment. Our professor gave us a product: Hawaiian Punch, and we are not in charge of developing and creating 50 ad ideas by Tuesday that will help to reinvent this long lost product. Punchy, the original mascot for Hawaiian Punch, was last used in the 70’s; since then, Hawaiian Punch has remained on the market by word of mouth. The lack of advertising has led to less sales and popularity. Our job is to create a way to bring it back!

Black and White Technique (Tuesday/Thursday 4pm)

This class has become very relaxing for me. Now that the dark room is a much more familiar place, I am really enjoying to plug in my headphones and go to town. The first four week, we were told to focus on shooting street photography. This week was our first week to get into the printing lab and really check out what we have been shooting. I am not completely blown away by my work, but am impressed by the process. I actually enjoy the process much more then the outcome. As for assignments and our MIDTERM- we have critique this Tuesday, which means I must present 5 prints of street photography.

As for all else, I am doing well and feeling great. It made my week being able to Skype with all of my grandmothers, my amazing aunts, my mother and father, and my wonderful boyfriend! Thank you for all of the support while I am here- it makes being away much easier! I love you all!!
Will update soon :)

This is an older video that was just given to me by a...

This is an older video that was just given to me by a friend.

We were eating curry and beef at our favorite restaurant: Cooking Restaurant.

This is my attempt to master the art of chopsticks.

Hello! It is Friday evening and I just got back from a day of make-up classes due to Wednesday’s Holiday. Though I only had one class, from 4-630pm, I attended a lecture this morning given by Octavio Garcia! It was incredible. It was a fabulous lecture. I really enjoyed the history of this company and how everything is hand crafted.

Some info:

Octavio Garcia is the chief artistic officer for Audemars Piguet, the oldest fine watch-making manufacturer still in the hands of its founding families. At Audemars Piguet, he works with colleagues to define, create and implement design strategies to build innovative and cost effective products.

http://www.audemarspiguet.com/

Check it out!

I will update more about my week, this weekend! Have a good weekend everyone!

Love and miss you all.

Good morning Everyone!

I am just getting out of bed and hopefully heading to enjoy this amazing Hong Kong Holiday that Hong Kong is celebrating today. All school and government buildings have been closed. Some info:

Chung Yeung Festival

The Chung Yeung Festival is a day to respect and remember ancestors, a ritual that is widely followed in Hong Kong among the Chinese community.

Also known as Autumn Remembrance, this festival is similar to Ching Ming in the spring, in that families journey to the graves of their ancestors to perform cleansing rites and pay their respects. They share the food they bring along, especially Chinese cakes, ko, which is a homonym of the word for “top”. Some believe that those who eat these cakes will be promoted to the top.

I hope everyone is doing well! I got to Skype with my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother last night (morning for them). It was really nice!

45 days until I come home for anybody who is excited! :)

Love you all. Will update with the usuals by the end of the week.
